I am scheduled to take my first certification exam next week. I used the 2020 HCS-D Study Guide. Any advice?

    Here are are few suggestions for you:

    • Be sure to reference the Tabular list -- don't code from the Alphabetic Index
    • Know when it's safe to assume a causal relationship between two conditions
    • Read the includes, excludes, and other instructional notes in the Tabular List
    • Watch for missing or incorrect 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th characters
    • Be careful of NOS codes when specific information is available
    • Check for a bilateral choice before coding right and left (if patient has a bilateral condition)
    • Check for combination codes
